Custom Bed and Bathroom Renovation
When the owner of this Southeast Portland home came to Lamont Bros. to help solve some design issues in her primary suite, we were thrilled to get to work on this unique remodel project.
The home had a two-bedroom upstairs layout with a single bathroom. The challenge was that the only way to access the bathroom was to walk through an awkwardly placed office space that the homeowner rarely used.
This project had several goals to improve the functionality of the space. The first was to rearrange the layout of the upstairs to make better use of the available space. The homeowner wanted a more traditional "primary suite" layout in which the primary bathroom connected directly to the bedroom.
As a cat owner, the homeowner also made her pets a priority. She wanted the cats to be able to roam throughout the space more freely. It was also important to her to have their litter boxes out of sight, while still remaining accessible for cleaning.
The homeowner had previously spent time living in Japan, where she developed an appreciation for Japanese bathroom design traditions. Specifically, she wanted a bathroom where the bathing area was separate from the rest of the bathroom.
As such, we divided the bathroom into two rooms. The first room, known as the "ofuro" room, features a
single vanity, a curbless shower, and a Japanese soaking tub.
The second room, a more traditional "powder room," consists of a water closet with a toilet and the main sink vanity. The powder room also incorporates hidden storage for the homeowner's cats' litter box, as well as floating vanities for easy cleaning.
Throughout the remodel, we focused on simplicity and ease of maintenance. The floating vanities and hidden storage options make cleaning simple and fast, and the addition of water filters at both vanities ensures filtered water for drinking without having to go to the kitchen.
In the primary bedroom, we built custom bookshelves into the wall, including one that functions as a hidden door. This door leads to additional storage space for unused home goods and decorations.
This primary suite remodel in Southeast Portland provided the homeowner with a functional, private, and aesthetically pleasing space. She can now enjoy her reading and wine in her new bathtub niche while her cats have the freedom to move around with the help of custom cat doors throughout the space.
