Whole Home Remodel for Wheelchair Accessibility
When these homeowners came to Lamont Bros., they knew they wanted to remodel their Milwaukie home to be more wheelchair friendly. Because one of the homeowners uses a wheelchair daily, it was important for them to have a home that he could live in with ease and comfort.
On top of the functionality changes, the homeowners also wanted to update the home to better fit their design style.
The first order of business for this project was the kitchen. Although the original design of the kitchen was traditional and worked well for able-bodied users, it presented a handful of challenges for wheelchair access.
To make the kitchen more accessible, our team moved the island further out to create wider pathways throughout the work area. We also added a floating sink so that the wheelchair can tuck under the countertop, allowing the homeowner to get closer when washing dishes.
The kitchen also features a table-height counter along the exterior edge of the island to allow guests to gather at a height that is comfortable for wheelchair users, as well.
This Milwaukie home remodel also included a bathroom update to make the space more ADA friendly, as well.
The original bathroom presented several accessibility challenges. including a water closet with a narrow entry that made the space difficult to use via wheelchair. The shower pan also had a raised edge, which the wheelchair could not cross.
To ensure that the homeowners had enough space to freely access their bathroom, our team removed the large soaking tub which the homeowners rarely used. We also installed a custom tile shower with a curbless entry.
Ensuring easy access to the toilet was more of a challenge — ultimately, the homeowners decided to expand the water closet and install two pocket doors at a 90 degree angle to provide an extra-large doorway when necessary. In the new water closet, we installed grab bars and a small sink to make cleaning easier after using the restroom.
In addition to the kitchen and bathroom, our team also remodeled the home's entertainment center to remove built-in shelving and provide a lager space for the homeowner's television.
