Northeast Portland Aging in Place Bedroom

A Bedroom Space Built for the Twilight Years

The owners of this 1920 home were getting on in years and decided it was time for a change. Their primary bedroom was on the upper level of the home, and they were finding that they would prefer to have a bedroom on the ground floor to allow for aging in place.

Fortunately, their home had the perfect space for a new ground-level primary suite. Unfortunately, that space presented several unique challenges that required the help of our team at Lamont Bros to meet the homeowner's needs.

The area being converted into a new bedroom was an addition built sometime in the mid-20th century. It appeared the previous owner had done much of the work themself, as the quality of work was substandard and needed a lot of correction.

In addition to the haphazard DIY work by the previous owner, the home also had lead and asbestos contamination. Both of these

dangerous materials needed to be removed and disposed of properly to keep the residents and our build teams safe during the project.

The first order of business was to remove the poorly-installed wood lap siding from the interior walls. We then brought in hazardous material experts to remove the lead paint and asbestos contaminants in the work site.

To make as much use of the space as possible, the homeowners decided to split the long rectangular room into 2 rooms: a bedroom and an office/media room. To accomplish this, our team framed and finished an interior dividing wall to separate the two spaces, complete with closet space for the bedroom.

New drywall, paint, carpets, and light fixtures completed the transformation. With just a few changes, we took the space from and old DIY addition to a new primary bedroom that will allow the homeowners to continue enjoying their home for years to come.
